Iraq = oil, not benevolent Americans trying to save them from a naughty Dictator. As we (or rather Georgey) makes promises to start leaving Iraq slowly, our military is building permanent bases there to secure oil reserves. Oh how I am humbled by a conversation I had with a friend years ago. I actually bought the idea that we were going to Iraq because of the WD's. I didn't want to believe that our President (who I didn't care for) would willingly go and murder Iraqi's for oil. Oh, but had I been smart, I would have been reminded of Somalia, Uganda, the Sudan, the Kurds, Vietnam, and well, basic U.S. history. Perhaps I was still in the early stages of shock that Gore didn't win.
I know I'm not the first person to point out that this war is a shamble but we need to be reminded. Energy and Capitol wrote an article about the lies being told to us by General Petraeus and the Bush Administration:
September 11, 2007 "Reading the General Petraeus report on the Iraq debacle reminded me of nothing so much as Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men yelling, 'You can't handle the truth!'
The report goes to great lengths to paint a picture of progress in Iraq, but the truth is a far different story. As the New York Times and the Washington Post have reported, the declining number of deaths in Iraq that Petraeus cites depends on a few accounting tricks: like not counting a death as an assassination if you're shot in the front of the head, and not counting deaths by car bombs.
So, what are we really doing in Iraq?
We're building and maintaining permanent military bases from which our military will ensure a near-monopoly of the world's second-largest oil reserve. All this... for a small cadre of corporate fatheads, including the top members of Bush, Inc. The American taxpayer will foot the bill for security in Iraq ($2 billion PER DAY!) to provide a stable working environment for Exxon-Mobil, Shell, Halliburton, not to mention the dozens of corporations feeding off the military spend teat."
All I can say is thank you to the intelligent people of the world that have the facts to support the many ideas that this Administration is flushing our ideals down the drain. For those of you who want to believe in this war, just know our President and his Administration are now among those warmongers who take lives too lightly and personal gain too serious. At some point these men have to be held accountable. Let us not forget that these group of leaders are deciding on some pretty big issues that change our lives. They are fighting a fight no one with a brain understands. It isn't noble. It is destructive and reckless and it's time it stops.
