Thoughts in Color ... not Black and White

post by dawn garcia |

I cannot believe that there was a story on CNN's site about Turner High School (in Ashburn, Georgia) having their FIRST ever integrated prom with blacks and whites together. How is that possible! I can't believe that in 2007 that is even an issue. Nearly fifty years after the Civil Rights Bill was in effect there are still people who actually believe in segregation? I don't understand this. I don't understand the idea that any race should be separate or that one is superior to another. Last I checked we were all human, part of one race - the human race. It's been the disgrace throughout history, this idea of race segregation. It's so primitive, so backwards. This is where having hope in mankind must prevail. I believe that everyone has the ability to make a choice. Even if you live in some small, quiet town there is no way that you cannot understand that this "elitist" idea is crazy on so many levels. Every ethnicity has its problems. Each one has someone who thinks their "race" is superior, but why? Why can't we go back to the simple idea that there are good and bad people, regardless of race. As corny as it sounds, what matters is supposed to be what's on the inside. Race doesn't make a man (or woman). It is simply a feature, not our make up. It seems almost cowardice to play any race card. I'm not saying society doesn't make it an issue but why can't we stop making it an issue and start basing our opinion of people on who they are not what they are? I'm sure this idea will upset someone but if believing that everyone has the capability to rise above the societal notion of separating people by race than this world is starting to look up. Living in a world of variety is what makes our species so unique. Imagine going into a museum to look at the art and all there were lining the plain walls were empty canvases. It would be boring, pointless. But when an artist incorporates beautiful color to a canvas and the colors blend together, the beauty is exquisite and moving. Perhaps we should remember that when our vision gets blurred. Now as far as Ashburn, Georgia goes, open your eyes, look at a newspaper, watch some world news - there's a whole world going on out there and guess what ... your ideology (though it seems to be improving) looks so sad and ignorant you better hope you speed up the pace and join us in the 21st Century! On a side note, I have a responsibility as a parent to do whatever I can to show my children the beauty in life and the potential of people. I was raised to see the good in others and to beware of those who are consumed with ill-intent. It isn't easy to go through life without prejudice but every thought is based on a choice we make. I chose a long time ago to see with broader eyes and as a result I have met some of the most extraordinary people. Without limitation, the world is truly your oyster ...
